David Andrew Gemmell (/???m?l/; 1 August 1948 – 28 July 2006) was a bestselling British author of heroic fantasy, best known for his debut, Legend. A former journalist and newspaper editor, Gemmell had his first work of fiction published in 1984. He went on to write over thirty novels. Gemmell’s works display violence, yet also explore themes of honour, loyalty and redemption. With over one million copies sold, his work continues to sell worldwide. During his early childhood years, he suffered greatly at the hands of bullies, but his stepfather, Bill Woodford (the inspiration for many of Gemmell’s hero characters), encouraged him to defend himself.
He was arrested several times during his teenage years for his involvement in an illegal gambling organization. After working for a time as a club bouncer, he began a career as a journalist, freelancing for the Daily Express and the Daily Mail, among other newspapers. David Gemmell is a member of Richest Celebrities and Novelists.
