He was a pitcher over parts of 13 seasons (1960–1972) with the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros. Gibbon was a member of the 1960 World Series champion Pirates. An alumnus of the University of Mississippi, for his career he compiled a 61–65 record with a 3.52 earned run average and 743 strikeouts in 419 appearances, most as a relief pitcher. Used almost exclusively as a starter in 1961, he set career-highs in wins (13) and innings (195.1) while posting a solid 3.32 ERA.
