Katherine Mary Dunham (also known as Kaye Dunn, June 22, 1909 – May 21, 2006) was an American dancer, choreographer, author, educator, and social activist. Dunham had one of the most successful dance careers in American and European theater of the 20th century, and directed her own dance company for many years. She has been called the “matriarch and queen mother of black dance.” At a time when African Americans were still battling blatant racism, she ran her own Katherine Dunham Dance Company, a self-supported organization that performed for decades.

She did not start to train in formal dancing until her late teens, and her interest in it became more academic after learning in school the centrality of dance to native African cultures.
