Melvin Howard Tormé (September 13, 1925 – June 5, 1999), nicknamed The Velvet Fog, was an American musician, best known as a singer of jazz standards. He was also a jazz composer and arranger, drummer, and actor in radio, film, and television, and the author of five books. He composed the music for the classic holiday song “The Christmas Song” (“Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”) and co-wrote the lyrics with Bob Wells. He was the teen idol of his generation after he appeared in Good News, the 1947 film musical.
He sang with the Coon-Sanders Orchestra at the age of four and was widely hailed as a child prodigy. He also acted in radio serials The Romance of Helen Trent and Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy from 1933 until 1941. Mel Torme is a member of Richest Celebrities and Jazz Singers.
